Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: The possibility of crushing broken bones and death resulting from the hazards of working with and around railroad locomotives, cars, switches, and other equipment in poorly lit or totally dark areas at night. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to repair all existing lights in these areas, add lighting if necessary and develop a procedure to periodically inspect these areas to maintain all lighting devices in an operable condition. Strict adherence to this policy shall be strictly enforced.
