Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment free from recognized hazards that were causing, or likely to cause, death or serious physical harm to employees in that workers were exposed to the hazard of falling onto and being caught by the running wire rope of the boom hoist drum of a lattice boom crawler crane, while situated on the cab roof near the area of the hoist drums, while the boom was in motion. On February 24, 2005 an employee was fatally injured when he slipped and fell onto the boom hoist drum as it was rotating. The worker's leg was caught by the running wire rope as it reeled back onto this drum. Among other means, a feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to develop, implement, and effectively communicate a work practice to ensure that all personnel and equipment have been safely positioned and removed from and/or near the area of the drums and other rotating parts of the crane prior to its operation.
